About Rick
|
| Rick Metsger grew up
in Sandy and has lived most of his life near the slopes of Mt. Hood.
Rick attended Sandy Grade School, graduated from Centennial High School,
and he earned a Bachelors and Masters Degree from Lewis & Clark College. |
 |
Rick started his professional career as a teacher at Sam Barlow High
School in Gresham and later served as an assistant basketball coach at
his alma mater, Lewis & Clark.
 |
Rick is perhaps best known for his 16 years as a television anchorman at
KOIN-TV where he learned that journalistic integrity means being fair
and accurate and accountable to the public. |
Rick’s commitment to these
principles won him an Associated Press award for best investigative news
report for the northwest region when he uncovered tanks leaking nuclear
waste at the Hanford Nuclear Waste Depository.
While serving on the board of directors as vice-chairman of the Portland
Teachers Credit Union, Rick became frustrated by the Legislature’s
inability to solve even small problems for citizens in such a partisan
atmosphere. Rick believed he could do better and ran for office and was
first elected to the Oregon Senate in 1998, one of the only Democrats to
win in rural Oregon. He was re-elected in 2002 and 2006 and has been a
legislative leader in the areas of transportation, early childhood
development, career training, and consumer protection.
He served as Chair of the Senate Special Commission on Educational
Excellence in 2006 and, this past session, as Chair of the Senate
Business and Transportation Committee. He currently chairs the Interim
Senate Committee on Transportation, serves on the Senate Interim
Committee on Education and is the Senate appointee to the State Debt
Policy Advisory Committee chaired by the State Treasurer.

Vincent Hospital, make their home in Welches. |
