Issue Surveys:

As we embark upon an interim of planning and drafting legislation for next session, I would like to ask you for a favor. Look at what you would like our beloved state to accomplish in the next few years to improve life for your family and our community. As your state senator, my first responsibility is to provide you with an effective voice in Salem. With your help, I have fought to make sure our district’s voice is heard loud and clear.

Please take the time to share your thoughts with me.

Much of the major legislation I have been proud to author and enact during the past 9 years has come from your ideas and with your support. I salute each and every one of you for the great contributions you have made.

Transportation Survey

As Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, I am charged with developing a major transportation package with the goal to ease traffic congestion on our highways and access roads. Your input will help us greatly in developing our plan of action.

  Background:

Oregon is the 9th most trade dependent economy in the United States with over 400,000 jobs (1 in 5) dependent on the transportation systems for their operation. Congestion increases travel time delay and has a significant impact on our state's ability to grow and maintain jobs and protect our quality of life. Projected growth in freight and general traffic cannot be accommodated on the existing system.

The loss of Federal timber revenue next year compounds the problem by cutting funding to Oregon counties in the hundreds of millions of dollars, which were spent in large part on maintenance and repair of our roads.

A recent study of the cost of congestion warns that if immediate action is not taken to reinvigorate our transportation system, in 15 years the potential income loss is estimated at $1.7 billion annually and also a potential loss of approximately 16,000 jobs.

Help guide our Congestion Relief Act (Rick’s Transportation Survey).

Over the next year I will be traveling around the state and meeting with many stakeholder groups and concerned citizens so that this Congestion Relief Act will meet the needs of all road users in all five regions of the state.

  Election Reform Survey

Issues of election reform and campaign finance reform have risen to the forefront of both state and national debates. Whether the conversation is about voter fraud or voter turnout, third party access in a two party system, or limiting the influence of special interest money, election reform has become quite a hot topic.
